How to Get Archaeologists in Civilization 6
Archaeologists are powerful cultural units in Civilization 6 that help you extract great works and artifacts from archaeological sites. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process to unlock and produce your first archaeologist, from researching the necessary civic to constructing the required buildings.
Step 1: Research the Natural History Civic
The first requirement is to unlock the Natural History Civic. Navigate to the top left of your screen and click on the Civic tree. Look for the Natural History Civic in the list. Researching this civic is essential because it enables you to construct archaeologists.

Step 2: Build a Theater Square District
Once you have researched Natural History, you’ll need to construct the supporting infrastructure. Click on the city on the left side of your screen and select “Change City Production.” From here, you can queue up a Theater Square district. This is the foundational district needed for your archaeological facilities.

Step 3: Construct the Amphitheater
After your Theater Square district is complete, the next building you need is the Amphitheater. This is built within the Theater Square district and serves as an intermediate step toward unlocking your archaeological capabilities.

Step 4: Build the Archaeological Museum
The final building requirement is the Archaeological Museum. This is the key structure that allows you to produce archaeologists. Once the Archaeological Museum is completed within your Theater Square district, you’re ready to create archaeologist units.

Step 5: Produce Your First Archaeologist
With all prerequisites complete, you can now produce archaeologists. Access the city menu and select “Change City Production.” Navigate to the unit section, where you’ll find the Archaeologist unit listed. Click on it to begin production. Your city will now construct an archaeologist that you can use to explore archaeological sites and extract artifacts and great works.

Summary
Getting archaeologists in Civilization 6 requires a clear progression: first research the Natural History Civic, then build a Theater Square district, followed by an Amphitheater, and finally an Archaeological Museum. Once these are in place, you can produce archaeologists from your city’s production queue. With archaeologists at your command, you’ll be able to access cultural resources that can significantly boost your civilization’s cultural output.
