How to Make a Road in Civilization 6
Building roads is an essential part of developing your civilization in Civilization 6. In the early game, the primary method for constructing roads is through trade routes. This guide will walk you through the simple process of creating your first road by establishing trade connections with neighboring kingdoms.
Early Game Road Building with Trade Routes
In the early stages of Civilization 6, the only way to make a road is to establish trade routes between your civilization and another kingdom. To do this, you’ll need to create a trader unit and initiate trade routes to expand your road network.

Creating a Trader
Start by building a trader unit in one of your cities. This unit will be responsible for establishing the trade route that creates your road.

Establishing the Trade Route
Once you have a trader, select it and choose a neighboring kingdom to establish a trade route with. For example, you might create a trade route to the Kusku kingdom. When you begin the route, you’ll see the path displayed on the map—this is where your road will be created.

Click “Begin route” to confirm your selection. The road will now be constructed along the path shown on the map, connecting your civilization to the target kingdom.

Summary
Making roads in Civilization 6’s early game is straightforward: build a trader, establish a trade route to another kingdom, and confirm by clicking “Begin route.” The game will automatically generate a road along the trade path. This simple mechanic allows you to expand your road network while simultaneously benefiting from the trade route bonuses.
