How To Meet Staff Needs In Prison Architect
Managing your staff’s well-being is crucial to running a successful prison in Prison Architect. Your employees have nine distinct needs that must be met to keep them happy and productive. This guide will walk you through each staff need and the best methods to address them, so your guards and support staff remain satisfied.
Checking Staff Needs
To view your staff’s current needs, navigate to the bottom right of your screen and click on Reports. From there, select Need, then choose Staff Needs. You’ll see a comprehensive list of all nine staff needs: bladder, bowels, food, safety, recreation, comfort, environment, rest, and hydration.

Meeting Individual Staff Needs
Bladder and Bowels
To address bladder and bowel needs, construct a small toilet and designate it as Staff Only. This ensures your staff can access bathroom facilities without mixing with prisoners. You can set this designation through the deployment menu by clicking on Staff Only and then selecting the room.

Food
Set up a canteen in your prison and assign a cook to it. The cook will manage food distribution from the canteen, and your staff will automatically eat there when they’re hungry. This simple setup ensures all your employees remain well-fed.

Safety
Safety needs are met primarily through staff presence. Hire plenty of guards and armed guards throughout your prison. The more security personnel you employ, the safer your staff will feel while working.

Recreation
Create a common room and designate it as a staff room. This dedicated space allows your employees to relax and enjoy recreational activities during their downtime.

Comfort
Comfort needs are satisfied through the same facilities used for recreation—primarily the common room and staff room. These spaces contribute directly to your staff’s overall comfort levels.
Environment
Keep your prison clean and well-maintained to satisfy environmental needs. Hire janitors to maintain hygiene throughout the facility. A clean environment directly improves your staff’s satisfaction.

Rest
Designate a staff room as a resting area and furnish it with plenty of couches. This allows your staff to get the rest they need during their breaks.

Hydration
Place drinking machines throughout staff areas to keep your employees hydrated. To add drinking machines, navigate to the Objects menu and select the drinking machine option. Install these machines in your canteen, common room, and staff room for easy access.

Summary
Meeting all nine staff needs in Prison Architect requires a balanced approach: build dedicated staff facilities including bathrooms, canteens, and common rooms; assign cooks and janitors; hire adequate security personnel; and provide essential amenities like couches and drinking machines. When your staff’s needs are properly met, they’ll work more efficiently and maintain better morale throughout your prison.
