How to Get Backpacks in Rust

Backpacks are one of the most essential items you’ll need in Rust to carry more resources and loot. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to upgrade your storage capacity, this guide will walk you through the easiest methods to obtain a backpack early in the game.

Crafting a Small Backpack

The quickest way to get your first backpack is to craft one yourself. Start by opening your crafting menu and navigating to the items section. Look for the Small Backpack recipe. If you can’t locate it visually, you can use the search function to find it quickly.

To craft a Small Backpack, you’ll need the following materials:

Finding Sewing Kits

Sewing kits are red-colored items that look like spools of twine. You can find them in several locations throughout the game:

Inside barrels scattered around the map

Various loot locations

From recycling clothes at a recycler

Gathering Cloth

Cloth is obtained from hemp flowers found in the wild. Look for pink and green hemp plants growing outdoors. Once you’ve collected enough hemp, bring it to a Tier One Work Bench.

Crafting at the Workbench

Once you’ve placed down a Tier One Work Bench, you can approach it and begin crafting your backpack. With your materials ready, simply select the Small Backpack recipe and start the crafting process. It’s that simple!

Upgrading to a Military Backpack

If you want even more storage space, you can look for Military Backpacks. These are larger variants with 28 inventory slots compared to smaller backpacks. However, Military Backpacks are semi-rare items that can only be found in loot crates and other high-tier loot locations—they cannot be crafted.
