How to Use Chainsaws in Rust
The chainsaw is one of the most efficient tools for gathering wood in Rust. If you’re looking to stock up on materials quickly, mastering the chainsaw is essential. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about fueling, operating, and maintaining your chainsaw for maximum efficiency.
Getting Started with Your Chainsaw
Before you head out into the world to start harvesting wood, you’ll need to have a chainsaw in your inventory. Once you have one equipped, you’re ready to begin the refueling process.
Fueling Your Chainsaw
The chainsaw requires low grade fuel to operate. This is the primary resource you’ll need to gather wood efficiently. To refuel your chainsaw, check your hotbar — you’ll see a fuel indicator showing “0” when the chainsaw is empty.
To add fuel to your chainsaw, press R (just like reloading a weapon). The chainsaw can hold up to 50 low grade fuel at a time, and it will consume all the fuel you add. This is an important detail: if you only want to use 20 low grade fuel, make sure you only have 20 in your inventory before refueling. This prevents wasting fuel.

Operating the Chainsaw
Once your chainsaw is fueled, you’ll need to start it up. To do this, right click with the chainsaw equipped. This will activate the chainsaw and it will begin consuming fuel continuously while running.

Chopping Wood
Now that your chainsaw is running, you can begin harvesting wood from trees. Simply approach a tree and left click to chop it down with the chainsaw. The chainsaw works incredibly fast — you can gather substantial amounts of wood in seconds. From a single tree, you can easily obtain around 1,000 wood.

Turning Off Your Chainsaw
To conserve fuel when you’re not actively chopping, you can turn off your chainsaw at any time. Simply right click again while the chainsaw is running, and it will shut down. When you’re ready to resume chopping, right click once more to restart it.

Summary
Using a chainsaw in Rust is straightforward: fuel it with low grade fuel by pressing R, start it with a right click, chop trees with left click, and turn it off with another right click to save fuel. The chainsaw is by far the fastest way to gather wood, making it an invaluable tool for any Rust player looking to expand their base or stockpile resources quickly.
