Researching Coal Mining Technology

To get started with coal mines, you’ll need to unlock the technology first. Navigate to your technology tree and locate the Resources section. Here you’ll find the Coal Mining technology available for research.

Once Coal Mining is unlocked, you can further enhance your efficiency by researching two upgrade technologies:

Coal Mining Optimisation — Makes coal mines more efficient

Coal Mining Rationalisation — Makes coal mines even more efficient

Understanding Coal Mine Types and Output

Frostpunk offers three different tiers of coal mines, each with progressively better output:

Basic Coal Mine

The standard coal mine produces 240 coal per workday.

Steam Coal Mine

An upgraded version of the basic coal mine, the steam coal mine produces 600 coal per workday.

Advanced Coal Mine

The highest tier coal mine available, the advanced coal mine produces 900 coal per standard workday.

Locating Valid Coal Mine Placement

Coal mines cannot be placed anywhere on the map. You are restricted to building them only at designated coal deposit locations. When you select an advanced coal mine (or any coal mine variant) and zoom out on your map, you’ll see special icons marking the coal deposits where construction is permitted.

In most scenarios, there are typically two coal deposit locations available on the map. If you’ve already constructed a coal mine at one location, the icon will still appear there, showing your existing structure.

Staffing Your Coal Mine

Once your coal mine is built and operational, the final step is simple: assign workers to staff the building. Once you’ve added staff to your coal mine, they will automatically begin extracting coal for your city without any further input required.
