How to Fish in Civilization 6

Fishing is an essential resource management mechanic in Civilization 6 that can provide your civilization with valuable food production. Whether you’re looking for a one-time resource boost or sustainable food income, this guide will walk you through the complete process of fishing in Civ 6.

Step 1: Research the Sailing Technology

The first step to unlocking fishing in Civilization 6 is to research the Sailing technology. Navigate to the top left of your screen and click on the Tech Tree. Look for the Sailing tech in the available options.

Once you research Sailing, you’ll unlock two important capabilities: the ability for builders to embark on the sea, and most importantly, the ability to construct fishing boats on fish tiles.

Step 2: Build a Fishing Boat

After researching Sailing, create a builder unit and navigate it to a fish tile on the map. Once your builder is positioned on a fish resource tile, you’ll have options for how to proceed with the resource.

Step 3: Choose Your Fishing Method

Option 1: Harvest the Fish (One-Time Resource)

If you need an immediate food boost, look at the bottom right of your screen where you’ll see the “Harvest Resource” option. Selecting this will remove the fish resource from the tile, but you’ll receive 63 food as a one-time payment. This is useful when you need a quick food injection into your civilization.

Option 2: Build a Fishing Boat (Sustainable Income)

For a more sustainable approach, build a fishing boat on the fish tile instead of harvesting it. A fishing boat will provide you with constant, ongoing food production from that tile, making it the better choice for long-term economic growth and food stability.
