How To Trade in Civilization 6
Trading is a fundamental mechanic in Civilization 6 that allows you to establish economic connections between your cities and rival civilizations. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to set up and execute successful trade routes in Civ 6, from unlocking the necessary civic to establishing your first trade connection.
Step 1: Unlock the Foreign Trade Civic
The first thing you need to do is unlock the Foreign Trade civic, which enables trading in your civilization. Navigate to the civics tree by clicking on the top left of your screen.

Once the civics tree is open, look for the Foreign Trade civic in the list. This civic is essential because it unlocks the trader unit, which you’ll need to establish trade routes.

Step 2: Build a Trader Unit
After you’ve successfully researched the Foreign Trade civic, go to one of your cities and click on the production menu. You’ll see a gear icon at the top of the interface.

On the right side of the production menu, navigate to the units section and select the trader unit. This will add the trader to your production queue, and it will be completed the next turn.

Step 3: Establish a Trade Route
Once your trader unit has been produced, you can now set up trade routes. Click on the trader unit to select it, and then click on the trade route option. You’ll see available trade routes displayed on your map. For example, you might see a trade route from your city (Kyoto) to another civilization’s city (Sparta).

To complete the trade route, click on your destination city (in this case, Sparta) from the list on the left side of the screen, and then click the “Begin Route” button.

The trader will automatically establish the trade route with the destination city, and you’ll begin receiving trade benefits immediately.
Summary
Trading in Civilization 6 is straightforward once you understand the basic steps: first, research the Foreign Trade civic from your civics tree; second, build a trader unit in one of your cities; and third, establish a trade route between your city and another civilization’s city. By following these steps, you’ll unlock a powerful economic tool that can significantly boost your civilization’s growth and prosperity.
