How To Upgrade Tents In Frostpunk

Keeping your residents warm is essential in Frostpunk, and upgrading from basic tents to more insulated housing is a crucial step in survival. This guide will walk you through the process of upgrading your tents to bunk houses and eventually full houses, including the research requirements and resource costs.

Understanding the Housing Upgrade Path

Tents are the most basic shelter option in Frostpunk, but they provide minimal warmth for your residents. Unlike some games, you cannot directly upgrade a tent in place. Instead, you’ll need to unlock better housing options through your technology tree and then replace the old structures with new ones.

The Three Housing Tiers

Frostpunk offers three levels of housing, each progressively warmer and more expensive:

Tent: 10 wood – The cheapest but coldest option

Bunk House: 20 wood and 5 steel – A mid-tier upgrade that provides better warmth

House: 35 wood and 25 steel – The most expensive but warmest option

How to Unlock Bunk Houses

To upgrade your tents to bunk houses, you’ll need to access your technology tree. Navigate to the Food, Health and Shelter section on the right-hand side of the research menu.

In this section, you’ll find the Bunk House research option, which is a much more upgraded version of the basic tent and will significantly improve your residents’ warmth.

Once you’ve unlocked the Bunk House research, go to your construction menu and select the bunk house option. Click on any existing tent to replace it with the new bunk house structure.

Progressing to Full Houses

After you’ve built bunk houses, you can further upgrade to full Houses for even greater warmth. To unlock houses, you’ll need to complete two research prerequisites:

Unlock Drawing Boards technology

Unlock Level Three Mechanical Calculators technology

Then unlock the Housing research

Once the Housing research is complete, navigate to your construction menu and select the house option. You can then place it on top of your existing bunk house to upgrade it to a full house.

Additional Housing Upgrades

Beyond the basic house upgrade, there are two additional research options available in your technology tree that can improve your housing efficiency:

House Insulation: Makes houses warmer, providing additional thermal protection for your residents

House Redesign: Reduces the construction cost of houses, allowing you to build them more economically
