How To Get A Pickaxe in Valheim
How To Get A Pickaxe in Valheim
Mining is one of the core activities in Valheim, but you’ll need the right tools to get started. The pickaxe is essential for gathering ore and valuable resources deep underground. This guide will walk you through the exact steps needed to craft your first pickaxe and start your mining adventures.
Understanding the Antler Pickaxe
The pickaxe you’ll be crafting is made of antlers, featuring a distinctive large antler on its head. However, you won’t get this material from regular deer. Instead, you need to defeat Eikthyr, the first boss of Valheim, to unlock pickaxe crafting.
Step 1: Hunt Deer for Trophies
Your journey begins with hunting deer to collect deer trophies. These trophies drop from deer at a relatively low rate—approximately 10% or slightly higher. You’ll need to gather two deer trophies total for the next phase of this process.

Step 2: Locate Eikthyr’s Altar
Once you have your two deer trophies, you need to find Eikthyr’s altar on your map. This is the boss summoning location where you’ll offer your trophies to spawn the first boss.

Step 3: Summon and Defeat Eikthyr
At the altar, offer your two deer trophies to spawn Eikthyr, the deer boss. Defeat the boss in combat, and it will drop hard antlers upon death. These antlers are the key ingredient you need for crafting your pickaxe.

Step 4: Craft Your Pickaxe at the Workbench
With your hard antlers in hand, head to your workbench to craft the antler pickaxe. The recipe is straightforward and requires the following materials:
1x Hard Antler
10x Wood

Replacing a Lost Pickaxe
If you lose your pickaxe during your adventures, don’t worry. You can respawn Eikthyr using the same method: offer two more deer trophies at the altar. This makes it relatively easy to craft replacement pickaxes whenever needed.
Summary
Getting your first pickaxe in Valheim is a straightforward process: hunt deer for trophies, summon and defeat Eikthyr at his altar, and craft the antler pickaxe at your workbench using just 10 wood and one hard antler. Now you’re ready to dig deep and discover the riches beneath the surface!
