In this guide, we’ll walk you through the complete process of obtaining and crafting copper in Astroneer. Whether you’re just starting your space adventure or looking to expand your resource collection, copper is an essential material you’ll need. Follow these steps to efficiently mine malachite and process it into usable copper.

Finding Malachite in Mountainous Areas

Your first step is to head to a mountainous area on your planet. Here, you’ll be searching for a material called malachite—a copper-looking ore that serves as the raw material for copper production. Malachite has a distinctive appearance that resembles copper ore, making it relatively easy to spot once you know what you’re looking for.

Mining Malachite with Your Extractor

Once you’ve located malachite deposits, use your extractor tool to mine up all available malachite in the area. The extractor makes quick work of harvesting the ore, so you can gather large quantities efficiently. Collect as much malachite as you can carry or transport back to your base.

Transporting Malachite Back Home

After you’ve finished mining, head back to your main base with your malachite. Make sure you have a safe route back and adequate storage capacity for your haul, as malachite can be heavy and take up considerable inventory space.

Setting Up Your Smelting Furnace

Before you can process malachite into copper, you’ll need to unlock the smelting furnace through your research tree. Once unlocked, retrieve it from your backpack and set it up at your base.

For optimal early-game efficiency, we recommend placing your smelting furnace on a large platform B. Then, add two medium storage units on either side of the furnace. This configuration allows malachite placed on the platform to automatically feed into the smelting furnace, streamlining your workflow.

Processing Malachite Into Copper

With your setup complete, place your malachite onto the large platform B. The smelting furnace will automatically begin processing the malachite. You’ll see the furnace slowly consume the malachite as it transforms it into copper. Once the smelting process is complete, the refined copper will automatically transfer to your connected storage units, and the furnace will begin processing the next batch of malachite.
