How to Harvest Stone in Rust

Stone is one of the most essential resources in Rust, and learning how to harvest it efficiently is crucial for early-game progression. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about gathering stone, from crafting your first tools to finding the right rocks to mine.

Crafting Your First Stone Pickaxe

Before you can harvest stone effectively, you need to craft a stone pickaxe. To do this, navigate to the Crafting menu and select Tools. The stone pickaxe is the first pickaxe you’ll be able to craft in the game.

The stone pickaxe is very primitive but serves as your entry point into tool-based harvesting. To craft it, you’ll need:

Once you have your stone pickaxe, you can begin mining stone more efficiently. As you progress, you’ll unlock better pickaxes through the research bench, which will significantly increase your stone harvesting speed.

Finding Mineable Rocks

One of the biggest challenges for new players is identifying which rocks can actually be mined. Not all rocks in Rust are harvestable, and this confusion trips up many beginners. Here’s what you need to know.

Rocks You Cannot Mine

Large boulders that are part of the environment cannot be mined — they’re simply scenery. Similarly, small pebbles scattered on the ground are not mineable resources.

Sulfur Rocks (Not Stone)

You may encounter rocks that have a yellowish or colored appearance. These are sulfur rocks, not stone. While valuable for crafting gunpowder and ammunition, they are not what you’re looking for when harvesting stone.

The Correct Rocks to Mine

The rocks you want to mine are completely white or grey in color with no special coloring. These are the only rocks that yield stone when harvested. They may appear as singles or pairs in the environment.

Simply approach one of these white/grey rocks and start hitting it with your rock or pickaxe. You’ll receive 200-250 stone per hit, and the harvesting speed increases significantly once you upgrade your tools.

Finding Stone Rock Clusters

While these mineable rocks can sometimes be hard to locate, they typically spawn in clumps or groups. You may traverse some areas without finding any, but keep exploring — you’ll usually discover multiple rocks clustered together once you find a good spot.

Once you’ve mined a rock completely, it will respawn later, so you can return to productive areas for consistent harvesting.
