How to Light Up Bases in Rust
Lighting up your base at night in Rust is essential for visibility and security. In this guide, we’ll walk you through multiple methods to illuminate your base, from simple fuel-based lamps to advanced electrical systems. Whether you’re just starting out or ready to set up a full electrical grid, we’ve got you covered.
Method 1: Tuna Can Lamps (Early Game)
The tuna can lamp is one of the earliest and most accessible lighting options in Rust. To craft a tuna can lamp, you’ll need three items:
Empty tuna can
Wood
Low grade fuel
You can find empty tuna cans by exploring and looting food crates throughout the map. Simply eat the tuna and keep the can for crafting.

Installing and Maintaining Tuna Can Lamps
Tuna can lamps mount directly on walls, making them perfect for lighting up interior spaces. However, they require regular maintenance — you’ll need to refuel them continuously with low grade fuel as they burn through it.
To refuel a tuna can lamp, drag low grade fuel from your inventory or a nearby refinery directly into the lamp’s fuel slot.

Where to Find Low Grade Fuel
You can obtain low grade fuel in two ways:
Craft it in a refinery
Find it in red barrels scattered around the map
Method 2: Stone Fireplaces (Basic Lighting)
Stone fireplaces and similar structures will provide some lighting to your base, though they won’t illuminate as effectively as dedicated lamps. If you’re in the early stages of base building, these can serve as a temporary solution, but we recommend upgrading as soon as possible.

Method 3: Electrical Lighting (Advanced Setup)
Once you’ve unlocked electrical components, this is the most efficient and scalable way to light up your entire base. The electrical route requires unlocking solar panels and using the wire tool to connect your power source to light fixtures.

Setting Up Your Solar Panel System
Start by unlocking a solar panel. You’ll find all electrical blueprints and recipes in the engineering workbench, which contains everything related to electrical components and systems.

Using the Wire Tool
The wire tool is essential for connecting your electrical components. When you approach a lamp or solar panel with the wire tool equipped, you’ll see two connection points:
Power In: Where electricity enters the device
Power Out: Where electricity exits to other connected devices
To set up your lighting system, connect your solar panel’s power out to a lamp’s power in using the wire tool.

Chaining Multiple Lamps
One of the advantages of electrical lighting is the ability to chain multiple lamps together. Most lamps have a pass-through connection, meaning you can run power from one lamp to the next without needing separate wires to each fixture. This makes expanding your lighting setup simple and efficient.

Summary
You now have three methods to light up your Rust base:
Tuna Can Lamps: Best for early game, requires constant refueling
Stone Fireplaces: Quick temporary solution with limited effectiveness
Electrical Systems: Most efficient and scalable long-term solution
We recommend starting with tuna can lamps while you progress, then switching to an electrical setup once you unlock solar panels at the engineering workbench. This will give you reliable, maintenance-free lighting throughout your base.
