How To Make Leather In Rimworld

How to Make Leather in Rimworld

In Rimworld, crafting leather is an essential skill for creating clothing, armor, and other gear for your colony. This guide will walk you through the complete process of obtaining animal hides and converting them into usable leather at your butcher table.

Gathering Animal Products

To make leather in Rimworld, you’ll first need to gather animal products or dead animals. The easiest way to obtain these is by hunting or allowing dead animals to accumulate in your colony. For this example, we’ll use monkeys as our source material.

To select multiple animals at once, double-click on one and press F on your keyboard to allow all of them to be processed. Once you’ve selected your animals, they will begin to drop dead (or you can hunt them), and your colonists will automatically start hauling them back to your base.

You may notice that your colonists are occupied with other tasks. Be patient—they will eventually prioritize hauling the animal corpses back to your base when they’re available.

Setting Up a Stockpile for Bodies

Before processing your animals, it’s helpful to set up a dedicated stockpile for dead bodies. This keeps your base organized and ensures corpses are stored near your butcher table for efficient processing.

Create a stockpile and set it to accept “bodies.” For clarity, you can rename this stockpile to “dead bodies” so it’s immediately recognizable.

Using the Butcher Table

The butcher table is where the magic happens. Navigate to your kitchen area and locate your butcher table. This is the primary station where you’ll convert animal corpses into leather.

Access the bills menu on your butcher table. You should see a “Butcher creature” option already available. Here’s an important detail: when you set up a butcher bill, food is actually the byproduct—leather is your primary product. If you prioritize butchering, you’ll get leather as the main output.

Prioritizing Butchering Tasks

If you want your colonists to prioritize butchering over other tasks, click on the butcher table (not the animal itself) and select “prioritise butchering at the table.” Your colonists will then retrieve dead animal bodies and begin processing them immediately.

Once a colonist begins butchering an animal at the table, the process will complete automatically. You’ll see the leather output appear—in this example, we obtained 19 leather from a single monkey.

The leather will be hauled off to your storage automatically once production is complete.

Summary

Making leather in Rimworld is straightforward: gather dead animals, set up a dedicated body stockpile, use your butcher table with the “Butcher creature” bill enabled, and prioritize the task if needed. Your colonists will handle the rest, and you’ll have leather ready for crafting in no time. With a steady supply of animal corpses, you’ll maintain a consistent source of this valuable crafting material.
