Understanding Building Decay in Rust

If you don’t set up your base properly in Rust, you’ll get a message on the right-hand side that says “building decaying.” This happens when your structure isn’t properly maintained, and it will eventually lead to your base being destroyed. The solution is straightforward: you need to set up a Tool Cupboard and stock it with the right materials.

What You Need: The Tool Cupboard

The first thing you need to build to prevent decay is a Tool Cupboard. You can find this in the construction section of your crafting menu, and it costs 1,000 wood to craft.

Stocking Your Tool Cupboard

The materials required to keep your base from decaying depend on how large your base is. The bigger you make your base, the more resources you’ll need to maintain it. Each Tool Cupboard will have a cost per 24 hours that you must maintain.

Here’s an example of what a mid-sized base might require per 24 hours:

3.5 Stone

400 Wood

34 Metal Fragments

9 High Quality Metal

The Critical Rule: You Need At Least One of Every Material

This is the most important part—you must have at least one of every required material type in your Tool Cupboard, or your base will not be protected. For example, if you add 1,000 wood and stone but forget to add even a single High Quality Metal, your base will continue to decay. As soon as you add at least one of each material, your base will be protected.

Tool Cupboard Range and Multiple Cupboards

Each Tool Cupboard only protects buildings within its range. If you build structures outside of that range, they will start to decay even if you have a properly stocked Tool Cupboard elsewhere. For larger bases or buildings spread out across your property, you’ll need to set up multiple Tool Cupboards.

For example, if you have a separate house or outbuilding away from your main base, you’ll need to place another Tool Cupboard in that structure with the required materials to keep it protected.
